PEACE RIVER STUDIO'S PIXORB SURVEYOR by Michelle Bienias Peace River Studio’s new ‘PixOrb Surveyor’ is a vehicle mounted automated camera system that can be programmed to shoot accurate panoramic or spherical arrays that can later be stitched together to create seamless panoramas or photospheres. The unit is for shooting single axis cylindrical panoramas but a second axis can be added to shoot full spheres. The camera frame allows you to adjust the camera so that it rotates around the nodal, or optical center of the lens, preventing parallax differences between adjacent images. Peace River Studios has also designed a wheel measuring system that attaches to a standard 2” hitch receiver and will read out both total distance traveled as well as any pre-set distance requires between panoramic or spherical ‘nodes’ so the vehicle can stop for recording at known intervals. GPS solutions can also be employed using a GPS receiver and roof-mounted antenna. The ‘PixOrb Surveyor’ is well suited for use on 4-WD pickup trucks for both on and off road use but the adjustable roof rack allows it to be used on a range of vehicles and boats: - The camera frame adjusts so that the camera rotates around the nodal pint in the lens. - The turntable can support large cameras and/or multiple cameras. A tilt axis can be added to allow the shooting of spherical mosaic arrays. - The motor and a programmable controller are enclosed in the base which is attached to the roof rack with four hand knobs. - The roof rack frame is wide enough so that two people can place the unit on top of the vehicle by lifting it from either side. - Control Wire and Fire Wire pass into the truck cab through the split rear window. - Suction cups with spherical connectors hold the roof rack on the vehicle.
