EXTREME ICE CLIMBING PANORAMA Ice climbing photographer Ignacio Ferrando Margeli in the Pyrenees. by Michelle Bienias
Photographer: Ignacio Ferrando Margelí, of Abaco Digital. What: Extreme Ice Climbing Panorama (XVR?) Ignacio writes, “The guys you see in the pano are professional climbers that were opening a new route; this kind of climb is called Dry tooling because they use their ice climbing tools to climb in the rock up to the ice falls.”
When: March 2, 2004 “The weather was fine to do this (max temperature -8C) but not for my foot fingers -I waited 2 hours in place and lost some sensibility.” Where: A mountain in the Pyreness, in the Tena Valley, Aragon, Spain Why: “It's really fun to do this kind of work....” How: “This time there were no axes because I can't stand without a rope, there were some 10 meters of vertical rock and ice below me. There was only a little place for my feet so I needed to hand off the rope to take the photos... I carried the monopod and the VR rig to take the photos but there was not enough place so I took the shot handheld....” Shoot Details: “I use a D1x with sigma 8mm handheld, I use also a Nikon 12-24 DX to shoot the background, then in the post processing I add to the pano, the processing was done with PTmac and PTools in Photoshop.” Email: if@abaco-digital.com | | | | The purpose of this banner is to raise funds for a new VR community project VRMag will launch in a few months. | |
