10:47 VALENTINE GROVE

Golden autumn leaves like crunchy corn flakes sweep-sweep-sweeping off my back veranda when I'll be through the first breeze shall blow them all back again in the yard I unearth garden snails disguised in gray earth three pairs hiding under a mineral shield a centipede rushes towards the far side of the fence where the Datura grows here and there frozen dog turds appear under a pile of dry grass by the butcher's broom tree I slowly unravel a green python around the B.B.Q. area the sleepy creature resists my will to coil-uncoil- recoil it in a functional garden-hose way the sun shines intermittently on the washing left out to dry the sky a gray doona cover of clouds I beat the dust free of the rugs on the line Betty sniffs the air then licks my right hand it's 10:47 on a Sunday morning in Valentine Grove the sound of the leaves rustling in the breeze reminds me of the rippling ocean on a calm day over the shoal.
