I AM SAILING... The Trofeo Yachting Library by Karen Guthry
Between 21 and 24 of June this year, the fourth edition of the Trofeo Yachting Library returns to Argentarioís Sailing Week. Relatively new, this maritime event is quickly establishing itself as one of the most popular events of the season. Exclusive to vintage and classic yachts, the Trofeo Yachting Library is organized by the Associazione Italiana Vele díEpoca and the Yacht Club Santo Stefano with the support of the International Committee of the Mediterranean.
On the occasion of the regatta, 40 of the world’s most beautiful boats will gather to compete in one of the most striking locations of the Thyrrenian. Amongst them will be last year’s winner, Tuiga, owned by Prince Albert of Monaco and Linnet, belonging to Patrizio Bertelli, patron of Luna Rossa.
Vintage yachts have become the quintessential boating symbol, as sailing in a vintage-boat regatta is every true mariner’s dream. The Trofeo Yachting Library takes place in the spectacular setting of the Argentario. Already a favorite destination amongst Italian yachtsmen, with its mild winds and calm waters, the region has been a highly prized location amongst seamen ever since Etruscan time.
The categories of the regatta are divided into vintage yachts, classic yachts, meter and monotype classes and spirit of tradition. Amongst the prominent regular participants, this year sees the return of Stormy Weather, the ocean racer of Olin Stephens, which has just been restored in the local shipyard: the Cantiere Navale dell’Argentario. Also worth mentioning is the American new entry Wild Horses, competing in the Spirit of Tradition class.
The regatta is one of a series of maritime events such as Pasquavela and the Regatta Gianni Poma organized by the Yacht Club Santo Stefano. Founded by a group of passionate yachtsmen back in 1960, the clubhouse resides in the villa Cortesini, on the tip of the bay of Pozzarello in the center of the bay — the ideal location for one of Italy’s best-known regattas. The club’s main activities include the sailing school, open sea regattas and activities at Olympic level. This year, the club hosts the fifteenth edition of the Argentario’s Sailing Week; an event which has attracted Italy’s bets yachtsmen, from Vallicelli Senior to Carcano, from Marina Spaccarelli to Straulino and Bernotti to Pellaschier.
Winners of the race will be those vintage and classic yachts that will have achieved the best overall score. The Trofeo Yachting Library is named after the publisher Yachting Library, which specializes in books about sailing and the sea. Amongst the event’s sponsors are the publication Arte Navale and Bentley Roma. | | | | The purpose of this banner is to raise funds for a new VR community project VRMag will launch in a few months. | |
